Your Child?

February 3, 2014 By Juanita Ryan 1 Comment

You invite me to be your child.
An overture I have often declined
since the thought of childhood frightens me.

But I am beginning to wonder
if you are offering me
an experience of childhood
as it was meant to be.

Maybe you are saying
that with you I can enjoy
unselfconscious wonder,
because you will share in my delight.

That, with you, I can be unabashedly dependent because you will welcome hearing
and responding to my needs.

That with you I can spontaneously express all my feelings, because you care about me.

That with you I can always be learning
and questioning, because you will patiently,
joyfully teach me.

You call me your child,
inviting me to be the child
I never had an opportunity to be,
offering me a second chance
at growing up loved.

I am amazed. Grateful. Ready.

——

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us,
that we should be called children of God!
